When Journalists become Historians. The French Case

Le Temps des médias n° 31, Automne 2018, p. 187-199.

This paper evokes the manifest taste French journalists have for history, exploring its origins and its contemporary expressions. For a long time, journalists and academic historians have been part of the same world, until the professionalization on both sides separated them. Since the 1950s-1960s, however, there is a massive return of history among journalists; the paper defines four categories of "journalists-historians": the witnesses (who have favoured the rise of immediate history); scholars and popularizers; journalists specialized in cultural information (often close to academics); producers and mediators of history.
