Catholic orders who studied how to promote Christian uses of the media - such as the Assumptionist father Emile Gabriel (1908-1968), a one-time managing director of the publisher, la Maison de la Bonne Presse, and a former chief editor of La Croix, developed what may be termed a ‘Christian communication theology’. On the basis of the Catholic notion of « social communications », the functions of the media were grounded in the essence of Christianity.
