From 1829, the satirical illustrated press is developing established itself within the French media landscape. Caricature, satire and cartoon have combined with a durable medium to become primary source of illustrated humor in the media during the nineteenth century. Meanwhile, the conquest of Algeria drew media attention. Like the pot-bellied bourgeois, the gauche oldier or courtesan, the Arab gradually became part of the repertoire of cartoonists. Ignored and then marginalized, the Arab progressively became characterized as a savage being utilised by the newsrooms.
