Electronic lists and Internet forums are an archetype for computer-mediated communication. I present their emergence in the 1970s and 1980s, resulting from the convergence of technical forms of digital data networks and social forms of user communities experimenting them. In order to understand how these communication tools laid out the future developments of the Internet as social media, while retaining specific qualities, I draw attention on how their sociability was mediated while defined by protocol choices. As such, they shed light on the conditions of construction, structuration and authority of territories for sociability in the early Internet.
