On August 7th, 1960, Ivory Coast gained its independence. The way in which the newspapers circulating in Abidjan covered this emancipation at the time illustrates the climate of trust existing between France and Ivory Coast. Fifty years later, the dailies of the Ivorian capital look back on this historic event. The tone of the press has changed dramatically, reflecting both the evolution of political relations between France and its former colony as well as the changes that have taken place in the Ivorian media landscape. By uncovering the political and media forces that shape the content of the press, this article analyses the way in which the newspapers are involved in the construction of a certain vision of the national independence and of the relations between France and Ivory Coast.
