La France défigurée (literally “disfigured France”) is the first television program dedicated to the subject of ecology. It was aired at the very moment when political ecology gained a lot of visibility in the medias. Its authors, the two journalists Louis Bériot and Michel Péricard, presented themselves as committed to the defence of the environment. This paper analyses the discourse of the journalists, their definition of ecology, comparing it to the other definitions of political and scientific ecology from the same period. It also sheds light on the ambiguities of their discourse about the protection of the environment and the contradictions between modernisation and the preservation of nature.
