International news agencies were the main purveyors of news from South America during the late I9th and early 20th centuries. The French agency, Havas, was the most important agency concerned. With the Spanish-American war (1898) the Associated Press, based in the U.S. played an ever-growing role. How were the basics of news-coverage of Latin American news put in place ? What kinds of news were transmitted abroad ? The questions appear simple ; The answers less so.
