The number of Chinese photographers who participate in the World Press Photo (WPP) contest is increasing, Soon it may surpass that of the United States. WPP’s beginnings date from 1955, and its organizing Foundation dates from 1960. From a questionnaire sent to hundreds of photographers and nearly 20 individual interviews, we learn that this “WPP fever” is due to different factors. They include the photographer’s aim of promoting his/her professional career and an attempt to skirt censorship rules.
